Eigenzinnig, grenzeloos en recht voor z’n raap. Het Sander Baan Quartet speelt zonder pretenties: muziek vanuit het hart, niet vanuit het brein. Elke compositie vertelt een persoonlijk verhaal met een geheel eigen karakter en voert langs een pad vol onvoorspelbare wendingen. Zoals het leven bestaat uit ups en downs, verkent ook de band een breed scala aan emoties, waarbij ze lyrische passages combineren met explosies van brute kracht.

De muziek op hun debuutalbum Country Music verbeeldt het noordelijke landschap: weids en ongecompliceerd. De titel refereert aan de landelijke afkomst van de groep en bewijst dat jazz een toekomst heeft buiten de hectische en macho New York-stijl. Het album uit 2014 werd door de Nederlandse pers geprezen met viersterrenrecensies in topbladen als Jazzism en Jazzflits. Na de release tourde de band door Nederland, Duitsland, Roemenië en België. Op dit moment kijkt het Sander Baan Quartet uit naar de release van hun tweede album, in het najaar van 2017.

Sander Baan (Leeuwarden, 1984) is a wayward saxophonist with his own distinguished sound. In 2012 he started his band with which he reached the finals of the Leidse Jazzaward and the Dordtse Jazzprijs. Besides that Sander has won the international bigband competition of Hoofddorp multiple times with bigband the Stageband. With the same group he recorded the album Journey to the Heart. Sander has shared the stage with Alex Sipiagin, Yuri Honing, Fay Claassen, Izaline Calister, Ben van Gelder, Steve Waterman and Robin Eubanks.

Sander Thijsen (Oosterwolde, 1991) is a young and aspiring pianist who already performed internationally (the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Italy, USA). Having studied at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen and the Rytmisk Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen, he is active both as a leader and as a sideman in different groups, nationally as well as internationally. After a performance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam 2012, Sander was invited to play at Carnegie Hall, New York with Karsu Dönmez amongst others. In addition to this, Sander has won prizes with several groups, among which the second prize of the Prinses Christina Concours and a Leidse Jazz audience award.

Jonathan Nagel is an active bassist and composer in the fields of contemporary jazz and improvised music, leading his own bands as well as being a demanded sideman in Germany and Holland. After graduating from the Prins Claus Conservatorium (Groningen, NL) and studying at the University of the Arts (Philadelphia, USA), Jonathan was selected in 2016 to join the European Jazz Master program, which is a joint study program of Europe’s most prestigious music conservatories. He performed with internationally esteemed jazz greats such as Michael Moore, Tineke Postma, Gene Jackson, Harmen Fraanje, and many others. Jonathan is currently living and working in Berlin (DE), Amsterdam (NL) and Copenhagen (DK).

Wieland Möller is a drummer, sound artist and performer in the field of jazz, improvised music and dance. Environmental strains and the evolutionary process of the pieces of music stimulated by them are especially important for his work.

Wieland works as a drummer with international bands of different stylistics, e.g. the Jazz Trio ATOS and Akvariet Trio. He has been a scholar of the Goethe Institution Germany and guest at the Buenos Aires Jazz Festival, Jazz International Rotterdam and North Sea Jazz Festival, among others, and has toured the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Island. He shared stage with Arild Andersen, Klaas Hekman, Tobias Delius, Christof Knoche and Daniel Carter a.o.
